John McMahon, CHRO, shares a bit of his department’s principles that make his team great
If you have a good idea, put it to paper. If you have a great idea for, say, establishing a set of principles that will define and guide those working in your HR Department, make a list. This is exactly how McMahon came to create the Cumberland Gulf HR Team Operating Principles. While the full list, 14 actions points total, may be for Cumberland Gulf eyes only, here is a top-five list that, much like McMahon himself, transcends lines of trade:
1. Give people the benefit of the doubt; probe for understanding; assume the best in each other.
2. Act with courage and compassion.
3. Do the right thing for the right reason.
4. Challenge the status quo. Incorporate innovation and imagination into decision-making and problem solving.
5. Have a sense of humor.
John McMahon is the SVP and CHRO at Cumberland Farms. The full feature story will appear in Forefront’s March/April 2014 issue. Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the full story delivered to your inbox when it is released.
