What Makes A Leader?

Leadership has a different meaning to everyone. What does it mean to you?

Merriam Webster dictionary gives a few different definitions of the word “Leader,” such as-  “something that ranks first,” “guide or conductor,” and “person who directs a military force or unit; a person who has commanding authority of influence.” In business, all of these definitions can be applied.

Though, in the confines of the dictionary, leadership cannot be defined by just a few words. Rather, it is a series of actions, experiences, and stories shared that can define who and what a leader is.  As an executive leadership magazine, we felt it was necessary to begin exploring.  We reached out to our network of executives and professionals, to help us pool together some thoughts on what makes a leader? In the next three weeks, you will see submissions from people like Jess Elmquist, Verona Dorch, Ned Breslin, Jorge Mata, and more- sharing their thoughts on what it takes to lead.

Stay tuned for more, starting April 7.  We’ll leave you to reflect on leadership in your own life with some quotes from great leaders in history.

“It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” Nelson Mandela
“People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. The leader leads, and the boss drives.” Theodore Roosevelt
“Good leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people.” John D. Rockefeller
“Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate, and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand.” Colin Powell
