Taking a few simple actions can spell the difference between being a good employee and being a great one.

Whether employees are starting a new job or attempting to outlast the fresh talent trying to replace them, it is of the utmost importance to stand out and be cast in a positive light. Understand that it may take changing some old habits in order to truly excel. Working hard is always the cure-all, but using these seven tips to work smarter will change the game.

No. 1: Put Actions Behind Your Opinions

“Well done is better than well said,” said Ben Franklin. Many people will take verbal stands. Yet few take a stand with action behind their opinions. For instance, if you think your project has swayed off track, instead of simply pointing out the flaws, jump in and help fix it. This goes for not only your own projects, but those of coworkers as well. If you want to speak out about mistakes that you see, then be a part of the solution. Anyone can speak up about problems. Those who solve the issues actually stand out.

No. 2: Contribute Positively

If you have a good idea, speak up. Don’t let fear of rejection stop you from sharing your ideas during meetings, especially if your idea is one that will benefit the company. It’s important to participate, but also keep the conversation moving; don’t speak to hear the sound of your own voice, but also don’t be a wallflower. Positive contribution to team meetings will directly correlate to success in the workplace.

No. 3: Show Who You Are as a Person

A big advantage to getting noticed as a new employee or in a company with many employees is showing your personality. Cultivating common ground is especially crucial in a diverse work environment. There is great value to sharing your hobbies and interests with colleagues. However, there are personal and private boundaries that should not be crossed. Do any relationship building in a responsible manner, and always be mindful of interactions at company parties or get-togethers. Relating and finding commonalities with coworkers will form and build relationships that could prove valuable in the future.

No. 4: Engage With Different Departments

A very unique and impressive way to build up one’s merit within the company is to communicate and work closely with people acoss departments. By fostering these relationships, one can strengthen his or her ties to not only the company, but also its most valuable assets, its people. Furthermore, brainstorming with these different teams will garner a better engagement and comprehension of how the entire company comes together.

No. 5: Excel at Something Specific

Meeting standards is expected of all employees. The ability to go above and beyond in a certain area develops expertise and will brand you as the go-to person for this specialty. It is not only important to have an area of expertise, but also to be a reliable coworker. Fulfilling tasks accurately and in a timely manner, while responding quickly and consistently following up, will allow an employee to stand out and become an asset to any company.

No. 6: Proficiency

Organization is a key ingredient to successful time management. It is not a secret that being organized helps people keep their lives on track, often allowing a stronger work-life balance. Preparation over procrastination allows you to dive into projects in a more efficient manner and lessen stressors that affect productivity. Take a step back, breath and prepare; actually create a list on which you can check off tactical duties so that you have time to focus on strategic components for a healthier business.

No. 7: Educate Yourself on Industry Trends

Stay updated on relevant news within the business’ field. Maintaining a solid understanding of current developments within the industry allows an employee to bring relevant ideas to the table in company or group meetings. Even if it seems trivial, certain nuggets of information when displayed accurately can impress bosses and other employees. So instead of indulging in Candy Crush or other mindless phone activities on the commute, stay up to date and relevant on current events.

No. 8: Go the Extra Mile

It’s no secret that arriving early and staying late will get you noticed. However, are you coming early to get a head start on emails or to actually get things done? Don’t be the person that just turns on and off the lights; instead, pay attention to ongoing projects that others ignore, resolve problems or finish pending duties from the day prior. Instead of just handling your tasks or duties, do something visibly worthwhile for the company.

Being a great employee and standing out from the rest does not mean simply focusing on oneself and one’s own success. Great employees spend a majority of time helping others succeed as well. Be proactive instead of reactive. Anticipating problems that may arise, as well as having the solutions to fix them, will go along way.
